Aubrey Homes: Modern, Yet Steeped In History

Aubrey homes offer a setting immersed in rich history and surrounded by picturesque vistas of thriving Texas prairie land. Originally named Onega, the first Texas and Pacific Railway section house was erected in 1881 and the town began growing into what it is today. The name "Aubrey" was drawn from a hat and replaced the unpopular name of "Onega" and the first post office was approved the same year.

The first home in Aubrey was built by Lemual Noah Edwards, a civil war veteran from Alabama, who was later given credit with founding the town. The town thrived in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, however, began to decline after the 1920s. Between the commercial production of the automobile, which changed Aubrey's position as a popular railroad depot, and the boll weevil and Great Depression, which caused most cotton farms to go out of business, the town suffered a recession. However, by 1980 Aubrey had bounced back as one of the largest peanut producers in the nation, and peanuts remain the area's biggest cash crop. Though it is fertile, the dusty land has attracted a slew of horse ranches in recent years. Today, old peanut farms are being converted into beautiful new houses that evoke a feeling of the past with their plantation-style architecture.
